Healthy Eating

We are planning to continue with our healthy breaks policy this year. The Department of Education have made it their policy to insist that all schools encourage children to develop healthy eating habits and parents have an essential role in this. From Monday 6th September we are encouraging parents not to include foods that contain chocolate, high levels of sugar, crisps and sweets as a snack.

Ideas for Suitable healthy break and snacks.

  • Pieces of fresh fruit.
  • Fruit pots or canned fruit in natural juice.
  • Salad Pots.
  • Vegetable sticks in low-fat dip.
  • Raw vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots celery, peppers and cucumber.
  • Bread, scones or pancakes.
  • Plain breadsticks.
  • Sandwiches. Filled bagels, baguettes, pitta bread or rolls.
  • Tortilla wraps or paninis.

(School Food: The essential guide)

It is well documented that damage is caused to children’s teeth by drinking diluted or fruit juice during the day. These drinks are very high in sugar content and having them in a water bottle and drinking them during the day causes the children’s teeth to suffer attack for the duration of the day. For this reason, we are encouraging children to only bring water to school in their water bottles. Your support with this initiative is appreciated.
