Over the last couple of weeks the children have been learning about Polar animals and how they keep warm in the cold Arctic climate. They have learned that Polar bears have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm. We decided to investigate this, using gloves for the Polar bear skin and lard for the blubber. The children had to put their hand into a bath of icy water first with no protection and then with the glove and lard. Overall, most children found that the glove and lard kept their hand warm.
